Reporter in phone hacking scandal talks

As a result, London Police are assigning 15 more officers to help the 45 already involved in the investigation. The hacking scandal has received intense attention since July 4th, when it was revealed that someone at News of the World tabloid hacked into the phone of 13-year-old murder victim Milly Dowler at a time when police were still searching for her.

Nick Davies, journalist, ‘The Guardian’ newspaper: “You get a kind of avalanche effect, and, I mean I’m getting a lot of calls from people who want to say things about what it was going on in Scotland Yard, and fewer but significant calls from people who want to talk about what was going on inside News International, and that includes what was going on at very senior levels in News International.”

Since then, London’s police chief and the head of its anti-terrorist operations have resigned; so did Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, and Les Hinton, a longtime associate of Murdoch who formerly headed News International.

Davies says the resignations mark the point where the story spills over from just being a story about journalists behaving badly into the power elite, which he says is really what the story is about.
