Facebook to launch music service

Posted on

Social network Facebook will launch a new music service on its website in partnership with other online music services, a media report said.

The launch is likely to be announced at a conference in August, Xinhua, a Chinese news agency, reported citing US media.

Technology blog GigaOM said users will find a new tab called Music in the left-hand column on their pages, right where Facebook lists Photos, Friends, Deals etc., and clicking on the new tab will open a page called Music Dashboard.

The dashboard will feature friends’ recommended songs, top songs, top albums and a “happening now” ticker that shows songs friends are playing.

The blog said Facebook has partnered with the European music streaming service Spotify, which is gearing-up to enter the US market.

Did a photographer commit suicide after shooting a video? No, it’s a Facebook scam

Posted on Updated on

Video camera

Scams continue to be a problem on Facebook, and the latest uses a ghoulish lure that we have seen before.

Messages are spreading rapidly on the social network claiming to be of a video that a photographer took three days before he committed suicide.

Or “commited” suicide, as the scam incorrectly spells it.

This really must have been an awkward moment.

Hmm.. does that story about a photographer committing suicide ring any bells? Well, it should do if you’re a regular reader of the Naked Security site as a year ago we told you about a similar scam, although on that occasion it was claimed that a horrific photo (not a video) had caused a man to kill himself.

The story had *some* basis in truth back then, although not much. The photograph used in last year’s scam showed an emaciated young girl in Sudan and was taken in March 1993 by prize-winning South African photo-journalist Kevin Carter. Carter did kill himself – but it was over a year later in South Africa, not three days after the photo was taken as claimed by the scam last year.

Anyway, time has moved on – and now the messages on Facebook claim that a video has caused a man to kill himself.

So, what happens if you click on the link? Where is your browser taken?

Look familiar? Have you seen that “Jaa” button before? Well, you should have done as it’s a very similar ploy to the “Amazing Orgasm” Facebook scamthat we saw spreading on Facebook last week.

“Jaa”, if you remember, is Finnish for “Share” – which should give you all the clues you need to realise that the scammers are tricking you into Sharing and Liking the video to spread it to your Facebook friends and family.

The reason they want you to do that is so that you will drive more traffic towards their online surveys – the scammers earn money the more people who complete these, and maybe you or your friends will be tempted to spend some time answering questions in the belief that you will see a morbid video at the end of it.

So you really should take much more care over which pages you agree to “Like” on Facebook. Remember, you should never be coerced into publicising a Facebook page before they have shown you the content you are interested in. After all, if you like what you see, you’ll only be too happy to share it with your friends, right?

If you got hit by this scam, make sure you have removed the entries from your news feed (to stop them being shared amongst your friends) and check your profile has not any unwanted “Likes” under your “Likes and interests”.

Hacker civil war breaks out

Posted on

A rival hacker group is working on exposing the identities of LulzSec members, following a spat over, amongst other things, the artistic and technical merits of their respective attacks.

TeaMp0isoN is believed to be connected to the pro-Palestinian Mujahideen Hacking Unit and to be responsible for a Facebook hack in December in which 15,000 pages were taken down.

But one member’s taken exception to dismissive comments from LulzSec about his age – apparently, he’s just 17. In response, he mocks LulzSec for using pre-existing tools and scripts to grab databases, and says he’s going to release information on the group.

“TeaMp0isoN Issue 2 is coming out VERY soon exposing lulzsec members (pictures, addresses, passwords, ips, phone numbers etc…. not so anonymous anymore are you? lets hope that you can swim because the lulzboat just got titanic’d,” he says.

The group describes itself firmly as blackhat, and says it’s not associated with the FBI in any way.

“We didnt do this because lulzsec hack other people, we did this because lulzsec/anon are scene fags running around thinking they are ug,” says the group on its Twitter feed.

“Were just fed up of people thinking anon/lulzsec are hackers when clearly they are just DDoSers and SQLi skids.”

While some news media have reported that TeaMp0isoN is based in the Netherlands, the group’s firmly denied this.

“no idea why people think we are dutch :L – 2 of us are from UK – and 1 is from USA – thats all ul ever know,” it says.

LulzSec hacks Arizona police over immigration issues

The latest in a string of attacks by a hacker group known as Lulz Security (LulzSec) targeted the Arizona police today. The hackers exposed user names and personal information of law enforcement officers as well as sensitive documents housed on their servers.

While rumors surfaced about a supposed kingpin of LulzSec being arrested by New Scotland Yard this week, their intimidation tactics continue, and we have no idea who the next target will be.

As usual many of the dumped passwords were easy to guess or crack, showing that too many people believe it can’t happen to them. It is increasingly apparent that using software and encryption to create and protect unique passwords for every website is necessary.

That LulzSec exposed these passwords suggests they were either unencrypted, or used an insecure hashing algorithm. This is bad in and of itself, but far worse if the victims used the same passwords elsewhere.

While many of us are frustrated with the current state of corporate security and would like to affect change in a meaningful way, we control our own destiny. Most of us reside within nations that have democratic governments and can participate in shaping our futures through legal means.

In my view, the hacker ethic is to empower people with understanding and to use our collective intelligence to advance our ideas. Destroying privacy by exposing the information of innocent victims doesn’t advance anything.

The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin quits Facebook

Aaron Sorkin, the writer of The Social Network, the Oscar-winning film about Facebook, has left the social-networking site.

The 50-year-old revealed he had left Facebook during a discussion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity this week.

Sorkin said he had joined the site during the making of The Social Network but had since quit his account.

The West Wing writer won an Oscar for his screenplay of David Fincher’s film but during a discussion with The Wire’s producer and writer David Simon at Cannes, Sorkin said he had a problem with some aspects of social media, including the way people absorb news through Twitter.

‘I have a lot of opinions on social media that make me sound like a grumpy old man sitting on the porch yelling at kids,’ he admitted.

Sorkin isn’t the first person associated with The Social Network to quit the popular site. Jesse Eisenberg, who played Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg in the film, joined under a fake name during the film’s production but left soon after.

‘I joined under a fake name and was sent a message from Facebook suggesting people I should befriend,’ the actor said.

‘One of them was a girl my sister was friends with in high school. I don’t know how they found her, no idea. I signed off right then.’

The Social Network won three Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing at the 83rd Academy Awards in February.
